Synopsis

World’s Smallest Parliament follows political life inside the Self-Government Building in Mariehamn, Åland, Finland.

Over the course of a little more than a year, the film takes us behind the scenes of a small autonomy to ask:

how does politics work when the system is small? The answer is: much the same as in a large one.

We follow a group of charismatic figures from across the political spectrum as they navigate failed electric-hybrid ferries, a head of state from the mainland who ignores them, and everyday conflicts that expose the psychological mechanisms of democracy.

World’s Smallest Parliament is not a political documentary — it is a psychological tragedy about democracy,

and you are the protagonist, without ever having asked to take part.
